Soreng

Soreng is located at 27.17˚ North  88.20˚ East. The rainy season here extends from May to November and in the past, rainfall has been recorded at up to 100 cm in August. The district is a favourite for trekkers due to its high elevations, and the economy here is mainly agrarian, despite most of the land being unfit for cultivation owing to the precipitous and rocky slopes. Soreng is the newly created district from bifurcation of West Sikkim district in the Indian state of Sikkim  with an area of 176.40 sq km.

The headquarters of the district is in Soreng. The town is connected to the capital Gangtok by a metalled road. It is also connected to the West Bengal towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong via Jorethang. The town has a large Nepali population, and Nepali is the predominant language of the region. Other languages spoken here are Bhutia, Lepcha, Limbu, Newari, Rai, Gurung, Mangar, Sherpa, Tamang and Sunwar.

Situated at an altitude of 4314 feet, the town experiences a temperate climate for the majority of the year, with snowfall occasionally in the vicinity. Some of the major towns located in the district are Soreng, Nayabazar, Kaluk, Mangalbarey, Sombarey, Daramdin, Chakung, Rinchenpong and Reshi. The district shares borders with Gyalshing and Namchi  to the east and west respectively, and with the state of West Bengal in the south. The town also has an international border with Nepal to its west.
